On Saturday at Otakon this year, I cosplayed as Captain Tashigi from One Piece! She’s always been one of my favourite characters in the series, and when her post-timeskip outfit was revealed, I knew I had to make it!!
The blouse is made from a light cotton, with all the flowers hand-painted on. I used stencils for the pink- & yellow parts, and then did all the outlining with a brush.
The coat is this wonderful pink gabardine blend I found at a local fabric shop! It’s fully lined. I took some slight artistic liberty by adding some trim to the front, but I think it really helps enhance the costume! The little bits of red & black really go well with Tashigi’s hair & glasses. The fur on the collar & cuffs is heavily interfaced Minky, the same fur I used on my pre-timeskip coat! The “justice” kanji on the back of the coat (which I sadly have no photos from the con of) is appliqué.
The gloves were purchased online, and I added the same fur to them as a cuff. My shoes are repurposed! They were originally a pair of worn-out brown dress shoes I got at goodwill for a couple of bucks. I drafted a pattern in muslin, and then made boot covers out of this dark pink faux suede I got on clearance at my local fabric shop. The covers are permanently attached to the base boot. It’s not the neatest or the best work, but it’ll do! I’ll be re-making her boots for the next con, since the shoes themselves finally gave out after all these years! hahaha
For her sword, Shigure, I modded a wooden bokken. The scabbard is a super thick cardboard tube with a thick fabric cover & ribbon & trim detailing (I originally sculpted the details with sculpey, but they, uh…. caught fire). Props are my weakest cosplay skill, so I’m pleased with the result, even though it’s not perfect.
The wig is Jasmine in Black from Arda. It’s a nice, SUPER-THICK WIG, but it’s also super heavy. I had to really pin it to my head. The bangs look kinda choppy, and theres flyaways that won’t be tamed, but this was the first wig where I did a massive amount of cutting & styling, so I’m pleased.
Overall, I love how this costume turned out! I’m hoping to do a nice photoshoot and get some super sweet shots of the cosplay at some point, after I fix up little bits. :D
